Live, real-time graphics are like a set of tools that sports broadcasters can use to help tell the story of a game. One of the first tools that LIGR.Live platform users take out of their toolbox is the MatchID Graphic.

Used directly after the Introduction Graphic, it is the first graphic viewers see in conjunction with a live video broadcast of the game. It sets the scene and allows the commentators to introduce the game, the venue, and the competition. It will usually provide details on the type of game – for example, Grand Final or Round 3 – and it can also show the records of each team, their position on the ladder, or their seed in a bracket.

While the MatchID is not the most important live graphic in a sports broadcast, it adds a level of professionalism and gives a strong introduction to the upcoming game, adding context to a matchup before the action starts.

The MatchID will generally only be used once at the start of the game, just before the Team List Graphic is displayed so that the commentators can talk through any specific player matchups. After the game starts, the Introduction Graphic is used during breaks in play rather than the MatchID Graphic as it also includes the Match Score and Live Clock.

Generating Revenue – The MatchID and Sponsors

When buying ad space, sponsors look for moments of high engagement during live-streamed sports games. As the MatchID Graphic appears at the start of a game before the action gets underway, it is visible on-screen at a vital moment when sports fans are poised and excited, anticipating the start of the game.

It’s also when the commentators introduce the game and have a chance to announce the sponsors. It’s common for the main sponsor of the league – for example, Hyundai as sponsors of A-League soccer – to also sponsor the MatchID for games in that competition. This means that the commentators can reinforce the brand message by announcing the sponsor while its branding is visible on-screen: “It’s a beautiful afternoon here at BlueTongue Stadium. Welcome to the Hyundai A-League Round 5 matchup between second-placed Central Coast Mariners and first-placed Sydney FC.”

Committed sports fans will open the live stream as soon as it’s ready to view to make sure everything is running smoothly and that they don’t miss any pre-game news – especially for big game matchups. This means that, even though the MatchID Graphic isn’t the most important sports graphic in live-stream broadcasting, it offers a great opportunity for sponsors to maximize exposure.
